ArtAuction

De Gray Rooms  York - January 9th 2OOO

I get 50 Artists to Each give me a work, I get a huge ballroom free  for a day, and an Auctioneer from Philips Ltd for free for an afternoon. I get the TV, the radio and the papers to cover us – and even someone from the NSPCC. And all for the sake of the NSPCC, and my belief that as an Artist I could respond to their ‘Green Circle’ Logo for their ‘Full Stop’. I felt it was too good an Idea not to follow through on. It would take from the April 1999 to January 2OOO to Organise and was over in an hour. Based on the philosophy that hard knocks are educational I think I must have learned allot

ARTAuction

 for the NSPCC

'FULL STOP' campaign

Concepts for the campaigning ArtAuction.

1]    There is a sort of 'sexy - seriousness' about the Higher echelons of the Art World, witness the  almost reverential respect paid willingly, by us lesser mortals, to the antics of that most  misunderstood genius, le enfant terrible. but their media presence is legend, and so are the prices their Works command. -  Premise A.

2]    Being an Artist involves being a taker of chances, and in this case and on my part, this involved the set of gorgeous green stickers that came through my door. The result, a Work –‘Of butterflies and sows ears. The significant point being, the  'brand', of the NSPCC Campaign, now Brands my Work These little objects of desire,  Artists can have fun with, and still, by default or design, speak of the 'Branding' for you – Premise B.

3]    It follows that by combining the above we acquire the concept of 'branded Artworks', by artists who are themselves 'branded'. Branded that is by their total package, by the exclusivity of their name, by the cut of their media profile, and by the interest that the sale of such works, in a one off event, would create. It would become a media circus, and at the centre of it all, the gorgeous green disk. and an opportunity to invest the campaign in a very high profile, media friendly and 'sexy' after glow. The newspapers will love you for it.

4]    My part in this affair is as the originator and as  facilitator I will draw on the endorsements I hope I shall receive from politicians, businessmen, celebrities and then other Artists, to persuade the great, the good and the infamous, of my profession,  to join me in a project of branded Artworks. I will ask them to produce, perhaps small, perhaps simple, perhaps even 'thumb nail' Works, prominently featuring green disks. Ideally these would be the green stickers themselves to make the point, and to make a feature of the  'FULL STOP' branding. For this reason, I will favour a 2-D format, paint graphic or drawing.

I can best imagine this precisely in abstract terms simply because I am an abstract artist, but every participating Artist will bring their own take to this. This should result in an exciting range of visions of a single precept. Two- d is preferable also in terms of ease of handling, transporting and  storage prior to auctioning. Furthermore in the ease of making each work, we would have to impose a time constraint in respect of what conditions may impose themselves nearer the time, so an easily or swiftly compliable work, which they could happily donate, would be by far the preferable

. The aim is to deliver with a  precision,  efficiency and I hope, not a little elegance, the maximum possible hard cash, payable directly to the NSPCC. There must be no expenses, fees or profits deducted on anybody's part. We must all give because we want to give, because we believe it is good to give. Personally' I'm on a near vertical learning curve, privately I call all this my 'graduation piece' I'm learning to be a 'can do' person.

5]    What I would need from the NSPCC, is that you first endorse my idea. Then if you would allow me to acquire Endorsements from those people who publicly endorse the 'FULL STOP' campaign. It's all about networking, The people I need to contact have Agents, and many of them are seriously private people. They are surrounded by people who's job it is not to be impressed by people like me. A sufficiently  gilded keys, perhaps bearing the initials 'H.R.H',  and the prestige and reputation of the NSPCC, would open those doors. If I can meet these  people face to face, I know I  can convince them to play a part. . Someone will be in a position to lend me a London venue, an auctioneer can be found who will give of their time. It's been done before in other walks of life. The art world is my world, it is  what I have to give of, but I want to give  more,  than the sale my work alone could possibly raise, and that's why I need your help in starting a 'class action'. Artists are highly motivated committed and compassionate people,  I know that this way We can raise a fortune, for noblest hope of us all, our children.
